Francis Mencl

MD MS FACEP FAAEM, Professor of Emergency Medicine NEOMED

Dept of Emergency Medicine Western Reserve Hospital Akron Ohio

With a bachelor’s from Case Western Reserve University and a master’s degree from Cleveland State, Dr. Mencl completed his medical studies at NEOMED (then known as NEOUCOM).  After completing his emergency medicine residency at Akron City Hospital (later Summa Health System) he joined the faculty there, staying on for almost 25 years; except for a two-year sabbatical in which he ran the emergency medicine training program at the OLVG in Amsterdam.  There he worked to establish emergency medicine in a country that did not have true emergency physicians at the time.  At the OLVG he also introduced propofol for procedural sedation in the emergency department; a practice that has since spread to other hospitals in the Netherlands.

Back in the US, he was Summa Health System’s EMS medical director for many years and became board certified in the subspecialty. Enjoying teaching and research, he is Professor of Emergency Medicine at NEOMED and on the editorial board of Prehospital Emergency Care and sits on a number of committees. Dr. Mencl has also been active in the Rallye-Rejviz, an international ambulance competition held annually in the Czech Republic.
